Kumbha Mela is the largest religious gathering in the world. It witnesses the coming together of millions of pilgrims accompanied by Sadhus and different Akhadas to take a dip in the holy river Ganges. It is celebrated in a cycle of approximately 12 years at four river-bank sites: Prayagraj (confluence of Ganges-Yamuna-Sarasvati), Haridwar (Ganges), Nashik (Godavari) and Ujjain (Shipra). The festival is marked by a holy dip in the river Ganges, but it is also a celebration of community commerce with numerous fairs, education, religious discourses by saints, mass feedings of monks and the poor and entertainment spectacle. The seekers believe that bathing in these rivers is a mean to Prayashchit (atonement, penance) for the sins done in the past and that it cleanses them of their sins.
Gurukula Kangri (Deemed to be University) was founded on March 4, 1902 by Swami Shraddhananda ji with the sole aim to revive the ancient Indian Gurukula System of Education, on the bank of rive Ganges from Hardwar and about 200 km. from Delhi. This institution was established with the objective of providing an indigenous alternative to Lord Macaulay’s education policy by imparting education in the areas of vedic literature, Indian philosophy, Indian culture, modern sciences and research. It is a deemed to be university fully funded by UGC/Govt. of India.
Arya Samaj has been advocating women’s education since the day it was founded. As part of its policies for the upliftment of women in the country, Kanya Gurukula Campus, Dehradun was established in 1922 by Acharya Ramdev ji as a second campus of women’s education. To give real shape to the dreams of Swami Shraddhananda ji, Kanya Gurukula Campus, Hardwar was established in 1993.
Gurukula has witnessed many distinguished guests in its journey to date. To name a few of them are Mr. C.F. Andrews, Former Prime Minister of Britain, Mr. Remjy Mcdonald, Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. Radha Krishnan, Sh. Jamnalal Bajaj, Dr. Munje, Sadhu Vaswani, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Smt. Indira Gandhi and Sh. Gyani Jail Singh, Sh. L. K. Advani and recently in 2011 Smt. Meira Kumar, Speaker Lok Sabha visited the Vishwavidyalaya.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Science was started in 2007 and presently running four year bachelor in pharmacy, 2 year diploma in pharmacy and PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The pharmacy courses are duly approved by PCI New Delhi. All the courses are job oriented specialized course emphasizing on the applied aspects.
In the beginning of the coming year 2021, Department of Pharmaceutical Science, Gurukul Kangri University is inviting all to Medicinal Plants Mega-Conference and Exhibition during the Mahakhumb Mela 2021. Anyone can participate in various activities like the yoga competition, oral presentation and poster presentation, different workshops which are beneficial for students and faculty and many more activities (POSTER attached).
