The foundation of Gurukula Kangri Deemed to be University in 1902 by the visionary nationalist Swami Shraddhanand Ji marked a defining moment in the evolution of higher education in colonial India. Established with the ideals of Arya Samaj, the university aimed to integrate Vedic knowledge with modern higher education. The study of English language and literature emerged not merely as colonial imposition but as a medium of modern intellectual exchange.
The Department of English has, over the years, evolved into a center of learning that disseminates knowledge from classical Indian texts to modern literary trends with utmost proficiency. Since its inception, the Department has aimed to equip students with an understanding of language and literature along with the values rooted in Indian ethos. The Department is committed to excellence in teaching and research. Its academic programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels are an amalgamation of canonical literature, classical Indian texts and emerging contemporary studies. The Department actively organizes academic events, including guest lectures, seminars and student-led departmental activities to foster scholarly engagement.
The Department envisions becoming a center of excellence in English studies. It seeks to cultivate intellectual growth rooted in cultural awareness and global engagement. Its mission is to contribute to the contemporary academic discourse through meaningful research in English language and literature.
